Note: James enlisted in 1861 in the Third Michigan Infantry. He died from heart disease in Virginia on the march into the Wilderness while in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Note: G.W. Topping was a physician from DeWitt, MI. They lived in DeWitt, MI until George died. Sindenia died at age 66 at the home of her dentist son, George B. Topping, in Columbus, OH.

Ballard, Alonzo {I04600} (b. 24 AUG 1843, d. 1 JAN 1917)
Note: Alonza Ballard joined Company C of the First Regiment of the United States Sharpshooters in the Union Army in the Civil War at age seventeen. He received a severe bullet wound in his side at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. The First United States Sharpshooters played an important role in stopping the massive Confederate advance against the Union left on that one fateful afternoon which marked the turning point of the Civil War away the from the earlier Confederate dominance. He did hopital service during the rest of the Civil War.

After the death of his first wife he prospected for gold at Cripple Creek, Co. during the gold rush there. His sisters and parents helped raise his son.
