With perhaps one exception, he was the most successful privateersman out of Nova Scotia in the War of 1812, and only thirty years of age. The "Shannon" measured 146 tons and had a crew of 50 men with five guns. He had only six men left when he manned out her sixteenth prize two months later. (Charles H.J. Snider, "Under the Red Jack: Privateers of the Maritime Provinces of Canada in the War of 1812"
(1928).
Gallant Capt. Ellenwood was murdered on Dolby's Wharf,
Halifax, in February 1815, on the eve of sailing home for
Liverpool.

Captain Benjamin Ellenwood was a sea captain on the St. Lawrence Seaway.
He was murdered on board his ship on Dolby's Wharf in Halifax Harbour. He had just arrived and had sold his cargo. He was murdered by one of his own sailors with a marlin spike. James Archibold of Pictou was later captured, convicted and executed for that crime June 2, 1815.

Two years later, his widow married a Halifax school teacher, William Riggs, by whom she had two more children. Ca. 1835, they migrated to Salem, Oregon, traveling by covered wagon over the Oregon Trail.
