Adams, Gilbert {I0015} (b. 1760, d. 15 JUL 1825)
Note: In 1789 Gilbert Adams purchased land in Carmel (then part of Fredericks) from Thomas Adams, called "part of the farm I posses", and was living there in 1790 next to John Jr, and Justus Adams. In 1796 he was an overseer of Highways in Carmel. By 1800 he was of Philipstown and purchased a property 1807 in (now) Putnam Valley.Gilbert Adams moved to his East Fishkill farm in the spring of 1810. His 1825 will listed 12 children, one evidently deceased with two minor sons.Though not mentioned in his will, his wife survived him and moved c.1833 to Delaware Co.Ohio where she made her will in 1841(no g.s.)mentioning only surviving sons-(no daughters or grandchildren).

Gilbert Adams (1760-1825)

Gilbert Adams was born 1760. He served as a Private in the Dutchess County Seventh Regiment under Colonial Henry Luddington, Captaina Mead and Waterbury. According to his great granddaughter, Gilbert entered the malitia at age 16 and served as a musician. He married Rachel Dingee by whom he had twelve children who survived to maturity.

After the revolution, Gilbert Adams purchased two parcels of land in what is now Putnam County. The first parcels, 150 acres, was purchased from Thomas and Mary Adams in 1789- recorded 1794-(Dutchess County,12:123) for L105, presumably part of Thomas Adams 270 1/2 acres (lot no 278) shown east of the northern end of Peekskill Hollow Road, lying partially in Carmel and partically in Kent as per old survey map. Thomas Adams, called "in possession, " had purchased the land from the state of New York in 1783 (commission of forteiture" evidently land that he had leased before the Revolution.

In 1806, Gilbert Adams purchased a 120 acre parcel for $27.50 from the State(Putnam County, J:123, recorded 1836. This land is roughly located above what is now Roaring Brook Lake in Putnam Valley Township, along Adams Street(now Pudding Street).

In the spring of 1810, Gilbert Adams moved to a 76 acre farm on the Shenandoah Road at the intersection of Line Kiln and Blue Hill Roads in what is now East Fishkill, Dutchess County.

Here he died on July 5, 1825 at age 64 yrs,7 mths, 22 days and was buried in the Baptist Church yard on Creamery Road in Fishkill Plains, Dutchess County.

Gilbert Adams made his Will May 31, 1825, proved on July 21, 1825. To the four youngest children, Bartholomew, Maybe D, Zillah and Ada A. He left the farm in East Fishkill to six of the older children, Rachel Barrett, Robert, Joseph,Samuel,Moses R.,Gilbert J., He left his land in Putnam , daughter Sarah Raynor apparently predeceased him; Gilbert left Sarah's two sons (minors) $50.00 each to be paid when they reach 21 years. Gilbert's son Philip Aams had moved to Ohio in 1823; Gilbert left him $400.

The farm in Fishkill was sold to Gould Smith. The land in Putnam was quit claimed among the sons, but was eventually sold to several people, but mainly to Jason Adams. All of Gilbert's children except Rachel Barrett, Joseph Adams, and Samuel's married daughter, Vashti Travis, had moved to Ohio by 1832 or 1835/36(Bartholomew)

Gilbert's wife Rachel(Dingee) Adams, though not mentioned in his Will, survived him. She executed several land transactions, singly and with others in New York. She moved from Dutchess County, NY., between 1830/1835 to Berlin Twp, Delaware County,Ohio. There she executed several deeds before her death in 1841. She was probably living with Maybe D(Mabah) whose household showed an older woman born(1760-1770) in the 1840 Ohio census.

Rachel (Dingee) Adams died April 7, 1841 and is probably buried next to her son Gilbert J. in the Berlin Township House cemetery, the gravestone next to Gilbert's is unreadable. Her daughter Zillah (Adams) Rundall/Rundle who had died in 1832 and son Gilbert J in 1836, predeased her. They and son Samuel(1843), his wife Catharine(1834) and Rache;'s great granddaughter, Naomi(1846), daughter of Benjamin and Electa Welch are buried in adjourning graves.

Rachel Adams made her Will March 2, 1841, mentioning none of her daughter and grandchildren. To each of her sons, Joseph, Samuel, Robert, Philip and Moses, she left a bible(to be purchased for $1.00 each) Mabah D., was left the household furniture and Bartholomew the balance of the estate, after debts paid, etc, the letter, two named as ececutors. Though Rachel Adams died April, the Will was not presented for proof until August 31, 1841.(Recorded Sep 8th)

No record of the marriage (presumbaly Baptist) of Gilbert Adams and Rachel Dingee or of marriage of the older children has been found. The dates of birth are approximate to(unless indicated) and are taken from the census or gravestones.

Dates o9f marriages if not from family records, taken from church or Civil Records or the I.G.I fiche.

Putnam County, part of Dutchess County (both or Fredericksburg Precinct) until 1812, was called the Philips or Great Highland Patent before the Revolution. It was largely, though not entirely, owned by the Philip family. It passed by inheritance to Philip, Mary(husband Roger Morris) and Susannah(husband Beverly Robinson) Philips. The Philip's family was loyalist and as such their over 400 square mile holdings were confiscated by the stateof New York and sold off to individuals, frequently the holders of leasehold farms before the Revolution.

In 1747 when the entire of Putnam was called Fredericksburg, Precinct, a John Adams was listed as a resident. Listed as taxable inhabitants in 1777 were Thomas Adams and John Adams also called "in possession" when he purchased Lot #227 (93 acres) in 1782 at forfeiture.
